HONORS: Loretta Carrillo: Loretta Carrillo was named Gavilan College’s Employee of the Month for August. She is a part-time instructional program specialist for the ESL Program and has been with Gavilan College since 1980.
HONORS:Â Spencer Smith:Â Air Force Airman Spencer W. Smith graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
Local cadets take first in competition: The Chesty Puller BN, United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, a naval youth program which covers the Monterey Bay area, recently placed first in their division at the annual Seamanship Challenge held at Coast Guard Island in Alameda. The unit competed in teams of four, and earned third place for Line Heaving; second place in the Obstacle Course; First place for Close Order Drill; First place in Damage Control; and First place in the Stretcher Relay. This gave them an overall first place in the Combined Units Division.
BIRTHS:Â Harper Elise Flores:Â Harper Elise Flores was born Aug. 24 to Rebecca Gutierrez and Chuck Flores of Hollister. She weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces.
ANNIVERSARY:Â Musachias celebrate 68 years:Â It was a day filled with smiles and reminiscing when Peter and Ruby Musachia celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary July 12, 2014 at home in Morgan Hill.
HONORS:Â Nina Singh:Â Morgan Hill high school student Nina Singh is working on cutting-edge evolutionary biology research at UCLA this summer. At UCLA, Singh will work with Dr. Pamela Yeh to research the evolution of drug resistance in bacteria. They are interested in understanding how we can use drug combinations to slow down the evolution of increased antibiotic resistance and to decrease the likelihood of future evolution of resistance.
HONORS: Herman EnrÃquez: Herman Jesus EnrÃquez, a 2012 graduate of Christopher High School, graduated from the Marines in February 2013 and will be home from Afganistán after six months of serving his country. He is the son of Rosa and Jesus Martinez of Gilroy.
