LOS ANGELES—Gilroy’s golden boy is making his return to the ring.
Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero will face off against Japan’s Yoshihiro Kamegai in a 12-round welterweight bout June 21 at the StubHub Center in Carson. The fight will be aired live on SHOWTIME at 7 p.m.
“It feels great to be returning to the ring after a long layoff,” Guerrero said. “I’m hungrier than ever and I’m ready to give the fans some exciting fights. I can’t wait to get in the ring and mix it up.”
The bout will be Guerrero’s first since facing Floyd Mayweather on May 4, 2013. It was only the second loss of his professional career as he boasts a 31-2-1 record, with 18 KOs, entering the fight against Kamegai. The Gilroy native has won world titles in four weight classes from 130 to 147 lbs. and will look re-establish himself among the division’s elite. Guerrero said he’s intigrated CrossFit into his training and is the best shape he’s ever been heading into a fight.
His opponent, Kamegai, sports a 24-1-1 record with 21 KOs. He’s coming off back-to-back knockouts wins over Tim Hunt and Jung-Hoon Yang in which he won and defended the OPBF welterweight title.
“In this fight, I want to make a statement that I’m back and I’m a force to be reckoned with in the hottest division on boxing—the welterweight division,” Guerrero said. “I’m coming hard and I’m going to let my hands to the talking. You’ll be hearing me loud and clear on June 21.”
The bout will also feature unbeaten Gary Russell Jr. versus Vasyl Lomachenko for the vacant WBO World Featherweight Title. In the opener, former world champion Devon Alexander “The Great” will square off against Jesus Soto Karass in a 10 round super welterweight bout.
