WBC Interim Welterweight World Champion Robert Guerrero celebrates following his unanimous decision victory over former Two-Time Welterweight World Champion Andre Berto on November 24, 2012 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.

Gilroy native and interim WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero has long been considered the most likely candidate to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

However, Mayweather tweeted Wednesday: “As of right now I don’t know who I’m fighting on May 4. Me fighting Robert Guerrero is just a rumor.”

Later Wednesday, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told Boxingscene.com that Mayweather’s foe had been selected, and that an announcement was “imminent.”

“We had conference calls with our lawyers yesterday and today,” Schaefer told Boxingscene.com. “All parties who are participating (on May 4) have agreed, and now the attorneys are working on the contracts … drafts are circulating. We hope that we are able to announce something by the end of this week or early next week. The contracts are being finalized, and obviously I don’t want to go and announce something without signed contracts. An announcement is imminent.”

Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) has sought a fight against pound-for-pound king Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) since the Gilroy native retained his interim WBC welterweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Andre Berto in Ontario, Calif., on Nov. 24.
