The Christopher High boys junior varsity and varsity basketball teams had a unique opportunity to open the 2010-11 season on the court inside Oracle Arena home of the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night.
The Cougars faced Watsonville in a scrimmage and also watched the Warriors take on the San Antonio Spurs, soaking in the pregame shoot around court side.
“It was such a positive and exciting experience,” CHS head coach Kaden Bahner said. “We owe the community, who purchased 161 tickets to the game to make this possible for us, a big thanks.”
Bahner added that he is hopeful that the Cougars and Wildcatz can turn the contest into an annual event.
The JV squad, led by Justin Ponzio, picked up a win in the exhibition matchup, while the varsity Cougars fell shy 59-50. Full stats were not kept during the game.
“I think we played well for the first game,” Bahner said. “We definitely need to limit the turnovers and make a few more shots, but defensively I thought we did well.”
The Wildcatz and Cougars will play each other twice more this season in Monterey Bay League action.
“It was nice for both sides to get that look (at each other),” Bahner said.
The Cougars have another chance to work out the early season kinks Thursday night as they kick off play at the Alvarez Eagles Classic against Burton High School.
Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m. in Salinas.
