It’s one of those good dilemmas – a problem that stems from being good at computers and science as well as enjoying English and writing, too.

“That’s why I chose Berkeley. They have a great liberal arts program there,” Clark said.

The 17-year-old senior will head off to UC Berkeley this fall to study computer science and physics. Clark doesn’t have any particular career path set for himself, but in five to 10 years he can imagine teaching and researching at Berkeley.

Even though he earned a 3.93 grade point average (that’s without weighted grading) and took nearly every Advanced Placement class Gilroy High School offered, Clark is no bookworm.

Clark played guitar for two bands, Despotic and Sidewalk Chalk, since his freshman year in high school. He also participated in the Interact Club – Rotary’s youth organization – and played junior varsity badminton and tennis for two years.

“I don’t see myself having a career in music, but I want to start up a band when I get (to Berkeley),” Clark said.

Clark, who will be a salutatorian at Friday’s graduation ceremony, says the thing he’ll miss most about high school is being around friends he’s known since fifth grade.
