Learning to give at a young age

St. Mary School students collected six grocery carts heaped with
canned fruit, canned vegetables, dry goods, yams, stuffing mix, and
fresh fruits and vegetables for the St. Joseph’s Family Center
during the school’s annual food drive. The school also collected
$722 for St. Joseph’s to purchase turkeys and hams. The school,
which has fewer than 200 families, has collected the food and money
for the center over the past four weeks. Following a school prayer
service on Tuesday, students walked down a path they had decorated
with chalk and presented the food and money to St. Joseph’s Family
Center.

Monterey Bay Aquarium seeks volunteer guides

Become a volunteer guide at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and help celebrate 25 years of inspiring ocean conservation. Learn about this opportunity at a Dec. 2 or Jan. 5 informational meeting. Both run from 7 to 9 p.m. and attendance at one is a prerequisite for the volunteer guide training course, which runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 11, 13, 14, 18, 20 and 21 at the aquarium. The course briefly covers the cultural and natural history of the Monterey Bay region, basic marine science and techniques for sharing information with the public.

Volunteer guides rotate stations throughout the aquarium and help interpret the aquarium’s galleries and exhibits to nearly 2 million annual visitors. This volunteer opportunity is open to individuals 18 years of age and older. Especially welcome are bilingual speakers and individuals who can work with the aquarium’s culturally diverse audience.
