Brittney Malick wins Region V Write-Off over thousands of other
contestants
Brownell Middle School seventh grader Brittney Malick, 12, will be awarded as the winner of the Region V Write-Off, a writing contest with a contestant pool of almost 3,500 students.
More than 500 AVID students and teachers representing 36 middle and high schools from Palo Alto to Soledad will participate in the Seventh Annual Writers Conference, a series of workshops led by university faculty and staff that is the culmination of the Write-Off. The Write-Off consisted of a prompt followed by a 45 minute block in which students were to craft a well-planned, grammatically sound, persuasive essay. This year’s theme was “the cost of freedom.”
The goal of the Write-Off was to practice on-demand, timed writing to prepare students for college entrance exams. Of all the seventh graders in Region V, which includes San Benito, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara and Monterey counties, Malick put forth the best essay. She will receive a plaque and a Borders gift card.
“This is a prime example of the wonderful direction our Brownell students are taking with the help of teachers and parents,” said Principal Francisco Fuentes.
The AVID program is offered as an elective at Brownell and prepares students for college eligibility and success.
Aside from writing, Malick enjoys running cross country and track, swimming and reading and hopes to be a pediatrician after many years of schooling.
“She’s a very well-rounded kid,” said Joanne Lewis, Malick’s AVID teacher. “She really tries to do her best and gives 100 percent. She won because of her ‘can do’ attitude.”
The award ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 7 at San Jose State University.
