Dear Editor,
After today’s tragic accident it is my sincere hope that the Gilroy Unified School District will re-examine it’s crossing guard program during the next 30 days. I think we are all to blame for neglecting school security and safety issues for far too long.
I suggest that we redouble our efforts and ask Superintendent Edwin Diaz and the school board to vastly expand and enhance the crossing guard budget.
If it takes a tenfold increase in revenue and in new employees, so be it. Our children’s safety must always be the number one issue in our growing city.
Every busy street in the path to an elementary school should have adult crossing guards. Gilroy is not a small town of 5,000 anymore. We must face the safety challenges of a busier, larger and more dangerous community with swift and decisive action so that accidents of this kind can be avoided in the future.
