Dear Editor,

Does anyone in Gilroy, especially the members of the Gilroy Gardens Board, know about or even heard of the Butchart Gardens located in Victoria, B.C. Canada? If not, I recommend that they go there because these gardens are what the Gilroy Gardens SHOULD have been or could be in the future.

The Butchart Gardens consist of 55 acres of various flower displays accessible by many winding paths throughout the park. When the various flower displays start to show their age, they are removed and replaced by another display that is just coming into bloom. The Gardens include various “theme” areas such as an English Rose garden, a formal Italian garden and a Japanese garden. It is open year round.

When my wife and I were there, the parking lot always seemed to have at least eight to 10 tour buses. The admission price was very affordable at about $25 Canadian per adult. Best of all there were no kiddie rides to spoil the experience.

I believe that Gilroy should purchase the Gilroy Gardens and promote the area through the Chamber of Commerce as a horticultural experience: that means getting rid of the “kiddie” rides except for the train.

If the Gilroy Gardens could attract the crowds that the Butchart Gardens do, then the it would be self sustaining economically and would be a credit to the community.

If you physically can’t get there, then go there virtually by logging onto www.butchartgardens.com
