Gilroy – The Historic Strand Theater was transformed into a high class cruise ship Wednesday for the Chamber of Commerce’s 13th annual South Silicon Valley Business Showcase and Mixer, “Cruise to Success”.

Sixty-four businesses set up booths, some decorated creatively with fishing nets, black jack tables and sailor suits to go along with the theme.

An estimated 1,000 guests wandered around picking up flyers, sampling food and swapping business cards.

“It’s great to be here, it’s a good networking opportunity,” said Steve Kiyan from Eagle Ridge. Their display featured posters of the golf course and club house. Guests could also sample the bruschetta and cookies they serve at their restaurant.

Angie Young, from Morgan Hill, came to the trade show on a whim.

“I’m just making my rounds. I won a mug and got bombarded with treats,” she said. Young liked the set up of the booths as well as the overall atmosphere.

“Everyone’s friendly, not pushy,” she said.

The Chamber of Commerce’s trade show is becoming so popular it is always looking for a bigger home said Marsha Becht, director of membership and programs for the Chamber of Commerce. It is difficult to find a building willing to make a commitment far enough in advance for an event that needs the space for only a few days. For now the Historic Strand Theater is a great location, as long as businesses understand that some people will be placed upstairs and that booth space is smaller than at other trade shows Becht said.

In addition to the DJ who provided music throughout the event, there was a booth decorating contest to liven up the mood. Gilroy Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center won first place with their nautical booth, complete with people in jellyfish and lobster costumes.

“People had a great time, they liked the theme and they though the Chamber did a really great job,” Becht said.
