Once again, Palma was the top team Monday in a Tri-County Athletic League tournament at Corral de Tierra Country Club.

Only this time, Salinas closed the gap considerably. The Chieftains, paced by Sean Etow’s even-par 50, had 281 strokes over the 13 holes the teams played. The Cowboys were just four strokes behind, led by Ken Munro’s 51.

Meanwhile, Gilroy and San Benito battled it out for the third spot, which the Mustangs took with a 309 to the Haybalers’ 318.

That leaves Palma in first place overall with two points, based on two firsts. Gilroy is still second overall with five points, one less than Salinas.

Kelly Cox led the Gilroy golfers with a 5-over 55. Jordan Miller and Jonathon Higgins followed at 60.

“Kelly played very well,” GHS coach Eric Kuwada said. “He is the most consistent on the team. He generally shoots 5, 8 over par.

“Jordan had a tough day. His 10-over-par was in stark contrast to his 3-over (last week) at Gilroy (Golf Course). Estevan struggled, which was uncharacteristic.”

On a warm, sunny day, Corral De Tierra didn’t play too difficult, according to Kuwada.

“I just think we had an off day,” he said. “Sometimes that happens.”

The next TCAL match is Monday hosted by North Salinas at Salinas Country Club. With Daylight Savings Time now in effect, the teams are trying to increase the amount of holes they play during league matches.

“We have to keep on improving and have a few of our guys turn up their games and score less than 8-over-par,” Kuwada said. “Our next match is at Salinas Country Club and we have played well there. We have to stay ahead of Salinas to keep our pace.”

The top two teams in TCAL qualify for the Central Coast Section, with Palma almost certain to finish No. 1.
