Dear Editor:
The Economic Development Administration (EDA), Seattle Regional Office received a copy of the Dec. 22 article in The Dispatch by Eric Leins, entitled “City goes through non-profit arm for grant.”
The mission of EDA, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is to help our partners across the nation create wealth and minimize poverty by promoting a favorable business environment to attract private capital investments and create higher-skilled, higher-wage jobs.
The purpose of this letter is to clarify a statement in the article that was incorrect or misunderstood.
The Department of Commerce, including EDA, does not have a rule prohibiting a municipality from winning two grants in a five-year period.
EDA does, however, have limited funds and must weigh many factors when awarding economic development grants. One of the factors the agency considers is to ensure the taxpayer dollars entrusted to us are being invested in an equitable fashion across each of EDA’s six regions.
A. Leonard Smith, Regional Director, U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration, Seattle
