Zach Cohen of Gilroy was one of only three Californians in a field of more than 2,000 competitors to win a title in National Bicycle League Grand National in Louisville, Ky., last weekend.

Cohen won the age 11 novice class, and he had to survive a grueling weekend of racing before claiming his title. Starting last Saturday morning in a group of 40 bicyclists, Cohen won three qualifying heats and then won the quarterfinal semifinals, all of which were elimination rounds, before losing in the semis to Mason Bornes of Indiana.

Facing a must-win in the finals, Cohen won the championship.
