Dear Editor:
I did not read the column or letter by Cynthia Walker with the misinformation regarding campaign expenditures by Lupe Arellano and Peter Arellano. I did see the apology. The apology appeared after many people had voted. It was too late, the damage had been done.
Cynthia’s comment that she should have checked her facts implies to me that this time, sometimes, most times or always Cynthia does not check her facts. So what are the sources of her facts? They are obviously not good sources. If not good sources, then they must be questionable sources, hearsay or even created facts.
I cannot say how influential Cynthia Walker is with her writings. In this case I hope she wasn’t. Cynthia certainly could not have impacted the mayoral race. As close as Peter Arellano was to the third council seat, she could have impacted that race.
I think the Gilroy Dispatch needs to review retaining Cynthia Walker as a columnist. Her credibility is certainly tainted. Can The Dispatch afford to have a columnist who admits to using incorrect information and by extension poor journalistic practices?

Editor’s note: Ms. Walker made an egregious error which we corrected in three separate letters – one the day before the election and two on Election Day. Ms. Walker has been a meticulous local columnist for years and has our support. That said, we apologize again for the mistake.
