We take a look at the stories that are coming to the web and in
the paper. This week: Future of city retirees’ pension payments and
Police sweep county serving warrants.
1. Future of city retirees’ pension payments

With the city’s financial health in decline, what will happen to retirees’ pension payments? Cities and school districts pay into a mammoth state fund that has taken incredible hits recently, so how will Gilroy have to pick up the slack? Councilman Craig Gartman particularly has expressed worry about the situation, but financial officials at the city and at CalPERS – the overseer of the state pension fund – insist Gilroy won’t have to up its contributions on behalf of employees immediately because CalPERS’ portfolio is diverse enough to absorb the market jitters.

2. Police sweep county serving warrants

In response to the two gang-related homicides, a drive by shooting in downtown Gilroy and a slew of stabbings and shootings in recent months, the Gilroy Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies swept South County, from Morgan Hill to the county line, serving warrants and making sure convicted gang members were in compliance with the terms of their probation or parole.
