Carissa Filice, a Gilroyan earning her teaching credential from the Stanford Teacher Education Program after graduating from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, has scored big time with a $150,000 five-year fellowship.
The award comes from the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation, which is designed to “meet the needs of educators from the onset of credentialing through the early years of their careers,” according to a press release. The fellowship is a major leg up as it includes mentoring, classroom materials, professional development and access to a network of like-minded colleagues and educators nationwide.
Once Filice earns her credential, she plans on teaching science “while helping students foster an authentic appreciation for the subject.” Filice says her decision to teach science was inspired by a number of standout educators throughout her career.
