Should the City of Gilroy spend $64,000 annually paying for health benefits for the City Council and mayor?

â– The question I ask is, “Why should they be receiving them at all?” They are working as elected officials and should not be receiving health benefits in this voluntary position.
â– No. Given the times, perhaps a 50/50 split would be fair. They do a lot for our community – but then again, I don’t get any benefits for any of the board/volunteer work I do.
â– Yes. It is a small price to pay for all of the hours they spend on City Council.

â– WOW! How is it possible that it costs that much for only 7 people? I guess it’s standard for Mayor and Council to get stipend and benefits. They do take away from their own businesses and jobs to do this public service.
â– No. The Council should have suggested eliminating it months ago. Representing Gilroy is an honor and should be considered a voluntary position, not a means to augment income or, in one case, a full time position.
