County Fire for local service?
THIS WEEK’S WEB POLL:

If it saves Gilroy 25% or more, should the City Council vote to disband the Gilroy Fire Department and contract with Santa Clara County Fire for local service?

Yes: 4 No: 8

■ No. There’s no guarantee that the county will be staffed sufficiently to assist the city. The county has serious budget deficits as well.

■ NO! They should contract for increased mutual aid and maybe decrease employees and at the very least reduce the number of personnel on a responding vehicle.

■ YES – the city cannot sustain the cost given the union’s unyielding position on wages and benefits and the requirement for binding arbitration. The unions are going to bankrupt Gilroy!

■ YES, this would be a big savings for Gilroy taxpayers.

■ Why not do a layoff? There are too many firefighters riding in the trucks.
