With New Year’s Eve just around the corner, some well-known
South Valley community members share what they hope to accomplish
in 2007
A sneaky way to be nosy is to ask someone about their New Year’s resolutions. It’s a politically correct way to ask someone what about themselves they need to work on – without being rude. So, in the spirit of being politely nosy, we asked a few prominent members of the community what they were resolving to do in 2007.
Brad Pike, mayor of Hollister
“Honestly, in terms of the city, it’s got to be working on an economic rebound. That’s what we’re on track to do with the sewage treatment plant and getting the moratorium lifted. We need to get people to have confidence in the city, have businesses come in and employ people and have our economy thrive again.
“Personally, my resolution is probably to get myself in better shape. Like a lot of people, I want to eat right, eat healthy – it’s a simple but powerful goal if you think about it. I want to be happy and healthy for my family.”
Steve Tate, mayor of Morgan Hill
“My main focus is getting on top of my new job as mayor. I want to do my best to make sure things in the city are guided in the right direction. We’ve got a lot going on, so I want to make sure and help things move forward.
“For myself, my resolutions will probably be the usual: go exercise more, lose some weight, that sort of thing. But, the major focus in 2007 will be the city and doing some great things.”
Eugenia Sanchez, member of Hollister’s city council and teacher at Las Animas
Elementary school, Gilroy
“Because I’m new to the council, my goals for 2007 include getting to know the city’s department directors and figuring out how we can all work together to help make this wonderful community even better.
“On a personal level, I want to make sure to spend plenty of time with my family in the coming year.”
Dale Foster, Gilroy fire chief
“I think anyone in senior management – myself included – has the resolution to maintain the right balance between work and family. I definitely want to make sure to balance career and all the other aspects of life outside the job.”
Al Pinheiro, mayor of Gilroy
“I don’t have one resolution, but I do have a list of things to continue to work on. Some of the things at the top of the list are the sidewalk task force, revitalization of downtown and working on traffic issues on the 152 and 156. Next year is my last year as mayor for sure, then God only knows what will happen after the elections.
“Otherwise, I only hope that God gives me health. If I have my health, I have everything.”
Bruce Cumming, Morgan Hill chief of police
“My resolution is to stay healthy and to work hard to provide the best possible service for residents and people who visit Morgan Hill. I want to make sure that they stay safe.”
