Community Solutions is anticipating a cruel triple-whammy: deep budget cuts due to the state’s $35 billion in red ink, increased demand for its services due to the flagging economy and falling corporate donations due to that same economic slowdown.

The agency provides social services to south Santa Clara and San Benito County residents, reaching more than 14,000 clients with just 123 employees. It provides a wide range of services to the mentally ill, substance abusers and victims of sexual or domestic abuse. Under the Community Solutions umbrella, there are supervised visitations for divorced families, a domestic violence shelter, substance abuse prevention programs, rape crisis intervention, family and child counseling and a restorative justice program for youth offenders. Did we mention that the agency helps children in foster care develop independent living skills?

These are important services which make South Valley a better place to live for all of us.

Faced with more clients and less money, Community Solutions is turning to the public for help. By early May, you should hear from someone at the agency asking for a donation. We urge our readers to give as they are able.

Someone you know has been helped by this agency. Let’s all make sure that the important services Community Solutions offers will be available when you, your neighbor, friend, coworker or relative needs them.

If you can, please lend a hand.
