Gilroy – Dilbeck and Sons will build the new elementary school, which is scheduled to open in southwest Gilroy in 2007. The Gilroy Unified School District board unanimously approved awarding the bid to the Salinas based architecture firm at Thursday’s meeting.

Dilbeck and Sons’ bid of $11.6 million was the lowest submitted by the five companies from Monterey, Gilroy, South San Francisco and Hayward. Bids were opened March 9. Dilbeck and Sons also is in charge of the construction of Gilroy High School’s student center.

Construction of the new two-story school is expected to begin the first week of April and last about 15 months. The district is hoping the city will approve the rezoning of the 10-acre plot of land where Las Animas Elementary School sits.

Once the land is rezoned for residential use, the district plans to sell it and send the Las Animas students to Antonio Del Buono and Rod Kelley elementary schools. Assistant Superintendent Steve Brinkman has pointed out that since the plot of land is already in a residential neighborhood, wedged between homes and Las Animas Park, development wouldn’t create anymore strains on traffic, water or sewage than already caused by the school.

In other district news, the board approved the construction of a special education four-plex on the Brownell Elementary School campus. The facility will be constructed on the southeast corner of the campus where current unused portables sit.
