At 4:10 p.m. on Nov. 10, Gilroy Police responded to the Arco gas station on the 400 block of Leavesley Road to investigate a counterfeit cash case after several weeks of reports around town of similar cases.
This time, a suspect was captured on a surveillance video camera. The suspect is described as a Hispanic female, 25 to 28 years old, five feet tall and 130 pounds with brown hair.
The suspect allegedly passed a counterfeit $5 bill to the clerk at Arco. When the clerk noticed the bill was fraudulent and confronted her, she quickly left the building and drove away in a white Toyota Tacoma (or something similar).
Police Sgt. Pedro Espinoza said he police don’t know if this woman is linked to the outcropping of other counterfeit reports in town.
“There has got to be something going on that these (bills) are getting placed out there in the community,” Espinoza said. “But lucky for us, she was capture on surveillance video.”
The incident at Arco was followed by a similar one in Morgan Hill Nov. 17. A man and woman from out of town were arrested for working together to cash fraudulent checks at Morgan Hill banks
