Then why not volunteer to help keep things running smoothly at your favorite county park? The county’s Parks Department is currently seeking volunteers to fill positions ranging from docent work to trail maintenance at several South County sites.
Open positions at specific parks include:
• Chictactac-Adams Heritage County Park – Docents are needed to assist park staff in educational programs at the park, which features facilities and programs on Ohlone Indian history and archaeology.
• Mt. Madonna County Park – Rangers need a group of 20 to 30 volunteers to remove invasive French broom shrubs three to four times through March. Training and tools will be provided.
• Motorcycle County Park – Three to four volunteers are needed weekdays to operate a water truck while park staff conduct trail and maintenance work. Training will be provided. A valid California Driver’s License and county driving permit are required.
On a system-wide basis, open positions include:
• Trail watch – Hikers, bikers and horseback riders are needed to help rangers patrol trails, provide visitor information, provide basic services in emergencies and report park violations. Volunteers must complete a 16-hour training academy and two training rides or hikes before being activated, when they will be asked to provide 48 hours of service within a year’s time. Uniforms are provided.
The next training is scheduled for February.
• Shoreline cleanup – Single-day and ongoing individuals and groups are needed to help remove trash and debris from shorelines at Anderson Lake and Calero, Chesbro and Uvas Reservoirs. Training, equipment and supplies are provided. Ongoing volunteers who adopt a shoreline for a minimum of one year will be recognized on signage at that park.
• Trail crew volunteers – The department is accepting applications for trail crew volunteers, who will receive in-depth trail and maintenance training and be assigned to work in specific parks. Volunteers also lead groups during special events.
