San Jose – The Santa Clara County Office of the District Attorney hired a 30-year-old with a background in television news and criminal justice to be a public information officer.

New hire Amy Cornell, a former news reporter and fill-in anchor for a television station in Chico, will earn $71,529 per year plus benefits in her new position. Cornell recently graduated from a master’s program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City.

District Attorney Dolores Carr, who was elected November 2006, praised Cornell’s background and experience.

“Hiring a full-time public information officer has been a top priority of mine since taking office,” she said.

City rewarded for risk management

Gilroy – The Association of Bay Area Governments rewarded Gilroy $60,000 for having “programs in place to reduce risk which allows the City of Gilroy and the ABAG pool to keep our liability expenses down and prevent claims,” according to a memo written by LeeAnn McPhillips, the city’s HR Director/Risk Manager.

The Police Department’s in-car video camera project and the city’s stance on sidewalks spurred the grant. It comes as city staff tweaks the sidewalk ordinance the City Council passed July 30 that transferred liability onto property owners for sidewalk-related injuries to the extent that the injury was a result of the property owners’ neglect of the sidewalk.

Controversy has arisen over the ordinance since city-planted trees are often the culprits of cracked sidewalks that can result in lawsuits, but residents can’t remove the trees without special permission from the city.
