David and Kelly Marie Baeta

Having grown up in Morgan Hill, I was pretty sure that I knew everyone my age. So I was quite surprised when my brother told me he was going to introduce me to someone who was my age, and even went to Live Oak at the same time I was there. I was running late after having been out running errands with my parents in Gilroy, and ended up meeting up with them in front of what was then the Inn at Morgan Hill. David and I had a great time together, but I was flying back to Florida (where I was attending college) in a week, and was not even thinking of relationships at the time.
Two months later, I moved back to Morgan Hill, and was sleeping in my new apartment, when someone rang my bell at 7:30 a.m. on a Saturday. Throwing on a robe and getting ready to kill the person who did not know me well enough to know that I am not a morning person, I opened the door to find a mutual friend of ours, Chad, standing on my porch. When I asked him what he was doing at my house, he said, “We were at a party around the corner last night, and thought we would stop by and say ‘hi’.”
I looked around. “We?”
Then David peeked his head out from the side of my house. He was so shy; he had been hiding where I could not see him. The three of us ended up spending the day together, and invited more friends to go to Santa Cruz with us for a bonfire.
Since then, he has rarely left my side. We have often compared notes of who we knew in high school, and are always amazed how close we were to knowing each other back then. But then we are always thankful that we never did. Neither of us is the same person we were in high school, and the younger versions of us would never have gotten along. We were married May 6, 2006, and for a wedding present, my parents got us a suite at the hotel where David and I first met.
