Gilroy – Gilroy didn’t know how crucial Thursday’s game with Notre Dame was until an hour after it had ended.

When San Benito knocked off Salinas 59-57, the Mustangs had moved into a tie for second place in the Tri-County Athletic League by virtue of their 40-34 win over host Notre Dame.

“I thought our defense was superb,” GHS coach James Wilkins said. “We shut down their top 3-point shooter. We transitioned from zone to man-to-man as soon as we scored. Our second-half fullcourt pressure man-to-man defense wore them down.”

Vanessa Wilkins came up with one of her best all-around performances of the season with 11 points, eight rebounds, six steals and four assists. Angela Silveira had 10 points. Dane Schoeneman and Russhelle Preeshl combined for 17 rebounds.

Laura Spellman came off the bench to give Gilroy an outside presence with six points. And Stephanie Solorio added two crucial baskets.

“Laura had a great game, as did Angela,” Vanessa Wilkins said. “I felt we all stepped up.”

The win boosted the Mustangs to 13-5 overall, 5-2 in TCAL. Notre Dame is 11-10, 3-4. Gilroy is off until Wednesday when it hosts San Benito.
