Sheriff’s deputies identified bones found earlier this month in the Los Gatos Mountains as 34-year-old Chiquita Ford of Oakland.

About 6 p.m. on March 7, sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of Black Road and Beardsley Road in the Los Gatos Mountains on a report of possible human bones off to the side of the road, according to the Santa Clara County Office of the Sheriff.

The bones came to the attention of authorities because a local man, who was in the area collecting cans for recycling, spotted them. The man called the Sheriff’s Office to report his discovery shortly after. Upon the arrival of the deputies they were directed to the area where the bones were located.

Ford went missing from Oakland in October 2007. She was described as 5-feet-5-inches, 115 pounds and black.

Deputies would not release how they identified the bones, but last week they issued a press release saying that they had discovered a piece of clothing – a Coogi hooded sweatshirt – at the scene that Ford had been wearing at the time of her death.

Detectives are actively investigating the case as a homicide and anyone with information can contact Detective Sergeants Leon or Baker at (408) 808-4500. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call (408) 808-4537.
