Sheriff’s deputies are investigating shots fired into a south Morgan Hill home that damaged the house but injured no one.

The shooting occurred about 6 a.m. Tuesday, but authorities did not discover the location of the shooting until the owner of the damaged residence arrived home, according to Sgt. Rick Sung of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

A tenant lives in the home on the 1500 block of East Middle Avenue, but no one was home at the time of the shooting. The homeowner and landlord called the sheriff’s office about 9 a.m. to report bullet holes through the home’s front windows, Sung said.

Authorities declined to release the identities of the tenant and landlord, or any information about them because the sheriff’s office investigation is ongoing. No suspects have been identified, Sung said.

Someone from the neighborhood called 911 about 6 a.m. to report hearing shots fired, but deputies and the caller could not determine where the shots came from until the homeowner reported the bullet holes.

The shots fired at the home came from at least one handgun, Sung said. He said “several” shots were fired but did not say exactly how many.

Investigators do not think either the tenant or landlord are gang members, but Sung declined to rule out the possibility that the shooting was gang-related. Deputies also do not know if the tenant or landlord was the intended target of the shooting.

“Anything is possible,” Sung said.
