Dear Editor:
One again it is that time of year the spirit of Christmas is in the air. Christmas lights are shining, trees are decorated and the anticipation of both Santa and the holiday spirit is everywhere. Unfortunately so are drunk drivers. The beginning of “Avoid the 13th, has officially started and will finish on Jan. 2, 2004.
On Saturday, Dec. 13, Avoid the 13th, Designate or Incarcerate Driving Under the Influence awareness campaign 2003 was held in front of the Gilroy Wal-Mart store. Information tables and officers were present to interact with the shopping community focusing on the importance of not drinking and driving.
We wish to thank the following agencies and participants who participated at this important event: California Highway Patrol Officer Armstrong, Santa Clara County Sheriff Office Deputies Harrington & Deputy Rumley, Mothers Against Drunk Driving victim advocate Barbara Jacobson, GPD K-9 Officer Quiñones & Kimbo and Sgt. Castañeda GPD Neighborhood Resource Unit.
The Gilroy Police Department would especially like to thank and recognize Dion Bracco of Bracco’s Towing and Transport who provided tow service for the MADD crash vehicle display trailer.
The crashed vehicle was a wrecked Mercedes Benz reminding the community what can happen when a driver has too much to drink. Each year our community is faced with senseless collisions and deaths that could have been prevented with a designated driver or had somebody taken the keys away from them. On behalf of the Gilroy Police Department, we wish everybody a safe and happy holiday. Designate a driver if you are going to drink, drive safely and remember to buckle up!
Officers Joseph Crivello and Rachel Muñoz,
Gilroy Police Department
