DEAR EDITOR:
Bill Guenther is a confused man. In a recent letter to the editor, he expressed puzzlement over why I despise George Bush. Actually, he said I hate Bush, which wrongly assumes I am willing to invest the emotion necessary to hate him.
Bush has never made a moral stand in his life. His entire administration has been about cronyism, providing everything from tax cuts that mostly benefit his country club pals to rolling back environmental standards that place the health of every man, woman and child at risk. Consider that during the first three years of the Clinton administration there were 30 major standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency. During the same period in the Bush administration? Three. And of those, two were forced upon him by the courts.
His tax cuts are the most cynical and destructive policy against the poor and working families I’ve seen in my lifetime. Of the estimated $234 billion in tax cuts scheduled for the year 2010, $121 billion will go to just 1.4 million taxpayers. Why do I despise Bush? For the 51.8 percent of the tax cuts that the Children’s Defense Fund notes are targeted to the top 1 percent of wealthiest Americans.
Where have those tax cuts put us? The deficits Bush has created through his reckless spending to help big business and a war that we were sold a bill of goods on will have enormous repercussions on our economy for decades. Why do I despise Bush? Let me count the ways.
