DEAR EDITOR:
I was reading today’s Dispatch and saw the information presented by Lisa Pampuch relating to the cost per square foot for the new police station. She tells the reader it will cost $545.23 per square foot to build the new PD (assuming we spend $26.7 million). This is not accurate – the true cost is $255 per square foot.
Lisa states that the city will build a “48,970 square foot police station complex.” This is not true. We are building a 104,920 square foot police station complex. The police station complex will include: 46,270 square feet for the main building, 3,650 square foot custodial facility within an on-grade 55,000 square foot parking structure.
Our construction costs are estimated to be $197.48 per square foot with total project costs at $255.12 per square foot.
I ask the community to consider these costs compared to the roughly $200 per square foot it costs to build a home in Gilroy. Please also take into consideration that the police station complex is required to be built at the much higher “Essential Facility” standard compared to basic home construction standards. The “Essential Facility” standard enhances the likelihood that following a major earthquake, the police station complex will be standing and operating long after homes have fallen to the ground.
