Man struck and killed by train identified
Gilroy – The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the man struck and killed by a train Tuesday afternoon was Ralph Don Martinez, a 46-year-old Gilroy resident.
Martinez was born in Oxnard and lived in Gilroy off and on for many years, according to his sister Carol Ogden.
“We are all stunned and saddened by what has happened to him,” Ogden said.
Martinez moved to Gilroy again within the past year, to work in construction. He always thought of Gilroy as home, his sister said.
Martinez is the youngest of five children.
Union Pacific police said Martinez was walking southbound on the train tracks that run along the east side of Monterey Highway, between Pierce Street and Leavesely Avenue in North Gilroy.
The driver of a train traveling southbound around 1pm Tuesday spotted Martinez and sounded his horn, but reported that the man never looked up and did not step off the tracks.
