Environmental work
behind schedule
Morgan Hill – Environmental work at the American Math Institute golf course in east Morgan hill is behind schedule, but progressing, city planners said this week.
“The time frames were overly optimistic,” said principle planner Kathy Molloy Previsich.
The course, owned by electronic magnate John Fry, was remodeled for professional play without proper environmental clearance. In exchange for allowing limited use, the city in August 2004 demanded that Fry take steps to ensure that surface and groundwater are protected. So far, two of three monitoring wells have been installed and the owners have submitted plans to manage nitrogen and chemicals at the course. Drainage and revegetation plans are expected soon. If progress is halted, the city does have the power to halt play, where Fry is building a castle to house the math institute and hopes to one day host a Professional Golf Association tournament.
County to expand Anderson
San Jose – Santa Clara County will spend $1.6 million to acquire 38 acres of land along E. Dunne Avenue in Morgan Hill to expand Anderson Lake County Park. The money will come from a park fund and not impact the county’s general fund.
The county leases the land, known as Jackson Ranch, for the California Pioneers of Santa Clara County. The acquisition will allow maintenance of historic structures and secures the alignment for the Bay Area Ridge Trail.
