McDowell hearing continued
San Martin – A pretrial hearing Thursday for Anthony Scott McDowell, 18, charged with vehicular manslaughter in the death of Gilroy High School student Erin Kinkel, was continued to Feb. 3.
McDowell was driving a pick-up truck in which Kinkel and another teenage girl were riding, unrestrained in the bed, on Aug. 1. On Redwood Retreat Road west of Gilroy, McDowell was driving at a high rate of speed and made an unsafe turning movement, according to the California Highway Patrol report. The pick-up struck a tree, and Kinkel and the other female passenger were ejected. Kinkel landed on the paved road, suffering fatal head injuries.
During his next court date, Deputy District Attorney Amir Alem and Ingo Brauer, McDowell’s attorney, could either set a date for a jury trial, or decide to dispose of the charges.
