Gilroy – Firefighters responded to a kitchen fire in an apartment at 7160 Eigleberry St. at about 10:30am Friday. Four engines responded, and the fire was quickly extinguished, but smoke and water damaged the front of the apartment’s interior.

Some family members were home at the time, but no injuries were reported.

Holiday symphony concert kicks today

Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony presents their Holiday Concert today at 4pm in the Gavilan College Theater.

The program will consist of traditional holiday Christmas carol sing-along, plus selections from the Messiah by Handel, featuring the Gavilan Concert Choir under the direction of Phil Robb.

Tickets are on sale at the Music Tree and BookSmart in downtown Morgan Hill, Mission Gallery in San Juan Bautista, Dorothy McNetts in downtown Hollister and in Gilroy at Snappy Photo located at 785 First Street, as well as the California Music Company and Porcella’s Music store in downtown Gilroy.

Admission prices are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors age 60 and older and students ages 12 to 18 are $7. Children younger than 12 will be admitted free of charge when accompanied with a paid adult.

Foundation accepting requests for grants

Gilroy – The Gilroy Foundation is accepting requests for applications to apply for 2005 grants.

The Foundation funds civic, cultural, educational, health and recreational programs benefiting the Gilroy community. Applicants must be a 501c3 nonprofit organization.

The application can be downloaded at www.gilroyfoundation.org, or call 842-3727 to receive one by mail. The deadline for submitted applications is Jan. 31, 2005.

Festival searches for its 2005 art poster

Gilroy – The Gilroy Garlic Festival is accepting entries for the 2005 Art Poster Contest. A $750 award will go to the winner. In addition, the first place winner shall receive 10 posters and one of each souvenir item produced with their artwork. The second place winner will earn $400 and third $200.

The deadline is 5pm March 1, 2005.
