Republican assembly meets tonight

Gilroy – Conservative Republicans and others are invited to attend the monthly meeting of the California Republican Assembly (CRA) at 7pm today. Meet at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites in Morgan Hill, 17035 Condit Road.

Duf Sundheim, State Republican Party Chairman, will speak and there will be local Republican candidates seeking CRA endorsement. The objective of the local CRA chapter is to raise political sophistication and keep abreast of politics.

Jerry Miller Band to play at Fifth Street Live

Gilroy – Looking for a great music experience this weekend? Come check out The Jerry Miller Band at Fifth Street Live this Friday!

The Jerry Miller Band will play Friday, from 7 to 9pm at Fifth Street Live, downtown Gilroy’s summer music series. The free concert will be held outside Happy Dog Pizza Company, on Fifth Street between Monterey and Eigleberry streets.

Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, The Jerry Miller Band is an authentic blues group. Miller, a founding member of San Francisco’s legendary ’60s rock band Moby Grape, finds his influences in Albert Collins, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, and Joe Jones. Miller is joined by Tiran Porter, former bassist for The Doobie Brothers.

Fifth Street Live is a free concert series sponsored by local Gilroy businesses. Plenty of parking is available off Eigleberry Street. Concerts are held every Friday through Sept. 29.

n Sept. 15 is Second Sight Day – donate old eyeglasses at either city hall.

n Sept. 16 is Keep Your Gear in Play Day, a great time to donate all sorts of sports equipment to either city hall for redistribution.

Second Chance Week ends with community garage sales in both cities.

South Valley symphony kicks off season

Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony will kick off their 33rd season opening concert on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 7:30pm at the Gavilan College Theater.

Maestro Anthony Quartuccio has announced his intention of featuring local talented musicians appearing as soloists with the orchestra in this year’s series of concerts. The opening concert will feature Greg Chambers performing the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra by Alexander Glazunov and Matt Thornton performing Weber’s Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra.

Gavilan golf tourney

Gilroy – Gavilan College baseball supporters are hosting an annual golf tournament on Friday, Oct. 14, at the Gilroy Golf Course. The tournament, which features a shotgun start format, begins at noon. The day is topped off with a barbecue dinner.

A baseball game pitting alumni against current players is scheduled Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Rams baseball field.

The golf tournament is open to community members as well as alumni, players and boosters. Former players especially are encouraged to register.
