No decision on federal money

MORGAN HILL – The Santa Clara Valley Water District has not decided how to spend $1.75 million earmarked for its perchlorate cleanup effort in Morgan Hill and San Martin. Water district board Director Rosemary Kamei, who represents the South Valley, said the board would wait to decide until the money actually arrives.

The funding is a small part of the $820 billion omnibus spending bill passed this week by the U.S. House of Representatives.

“We haven’t really considered where it will go,” Kamei said, “but we are very excited about it. We are also proud that our local representatives consider the problem critical.”

Olin Corp. has admitted responsibility for contaminating South Valley groundwater with perchlorate from 40 years of manufacturing safety flares at its former plant on Tennant and Railroad avenues.

Kamei said the water district is working with Olin over the cost of the cleanup effort, for which the district has paid a large part hoping to be paid back eventually, but she is not aware of having received any money from Olin.

“We decided to go ahead and spend the money,” Kamei said, “hoping to get reimbursed. We wanted things to happen fast enough. But we are thrilled that some money is coming from the government.”

The bill goes to the Senate in January. President George Bush would have to sign the bill for it to become law.
