Elementary school districts, and the corresponding portion of the
East Side Union High School District.

San Jose – The Santa Clara County Board of Education is looking to fill a trustee vacancy for area 7, which covers the Gilroy Unified, Morgan Hill Unified, Alum Rock Union Elementary and Mount Pleasant Elementary school districts, and the corresponding portion of the East Side Union High School District. Applicants must be registered voters and must reside within area 7. The candidate cannot be employed by the county office of education or any school district while serving on the board.

The board sets policies that guide the county office of education and establishes its operating budget. It meets in public session at 5pm on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 1290 Ridder Park Drive in San Jose. Interested individuals should submit a resume and a letter including interests and qualifications for the position to Dr. Colleen Wilcox, Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools, 1290 Ridder Park Drive, San Jose, 95131-2304 or fax to (408) 453-6601. The deadline is 5 p.m. March 18. Appointment is expected in April.

It’s ‘Bach to Blues’ time in Gilroy

Gilroy – Local musicians and Gavilan College music faculty members will team up with the South Valley Symphony String Quartet to perform the 2005 benefit concert “Bach to Blues” at 7:30pm Friday at the Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

The concert features a wide range of musical genres including flamenco, mariachi and opera.

Tickets are $15 for general seating, $10 for seniors and students and $25 for V.I.P.

Tickets are sold online at www.gavilan.edu/bachtoblues and in Gilroy at the Gavilan College Box Office and at all South Valley Symphony outlets including the Gavilan College Bookstore, The California Music Company, Porcella’s Music and Carole’s Hallmark. In Morgan Hill, tickets are sold at Gavilan College Morgan Hill and The Music Tree. In Hollister, tickets are sold at Gavilan College Hollister and Dorothy McNett’s Place. Funds raised will support music education and equipment for the Gavilan College music department.

Eat, dance to benefit St. Mary’s youth group

Gilroy – Margaritas, raffle prizes, good food and dancing to the music of the ’70s and ’80s will highlight a benefit evening from 6pm to midnight Saturday for the St. Mary’s Youth Group Mexico Mission Trip.

Tickets are $25 per person for the event to be held at Cullen Hall, 11 First Street, in Gilroy.

Proceeds will help fund the annual trip to Mexico during which students build new homes for residents in some of Tijuana’s poorest neighborhoods.

Study, live in and enjoy Spain this summer

Gilroy – Free information session will provide details on participation. Whatever your Spanish-language skills, this is your chance to improve. Summer study program in Malaga, Spain. Students will live with a local family during this four-week program while learning Spanish through both classroom work and cultural immersion. Transferable college credit will be granted for successful completion of the program.
