GILROY – Gavilan’s 2009 football squad earned six players on the All-Coast Conference Team announced recently.

Four Rams from the offensive unit and two off the defense were named all-conference after the team went 2-2 in conference action, 3-6 overall.

DeAnza, the conference champion, netted the Coach of the Year (Dan Atencio), Offensive Player of the Year (Kevin Vye of Gilroy) and Defensive Player of the Year (Russ Jenkins).

Although the all-conference team was dominated by sophomores, two Gavilan freshmen were honored. Sean Hale, a Gilroy High graduate, was selected among the running backs. Hale also handled punting chores for coach John Lango’s Rams. Linebacker Dustin Leffew, out of Hollister High, was one of seven all-conference selections at that position.

Three other Rams were named to the 22-player offensive unit.

Wade Jacobson, a highly touted tackle out of Hollister High, and guard Jeff Grattan out of Westmont High were among 10 linemen selected.

Tim Harvey, who finished in the top 10 all-time in receptions in Gavilan history, was tabbed all-conference. Harvey, a 6-foot-2, 175-pounder, played prep football at Berkeley High.

Arthur Pittman, a 5-foot-7, 155-pounder out of Grant High School, made the select team for the second year. Pittman, a cornerback, scored touchdowns with interceptions and kick-off returns.

Gavilan also netted David Tapia-Padron and Ryan Costa on the Honorable Mention list.
