GILROY – On Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. local performing and visual art lovers will have an oppor-tunity to attend an arts con-ference at the Strand Theater. Charles Morales, Gilroy City Coun-cilman, will speak on the “politics of art – building a strong political voice.” Christina Goodney, from Young Audiences Silicon Valley, will focus on the role of non-profits in the infusion of arts into the educational curriculum. Diem Jones will talk about the role of his agency, Arts Council Silicon Valley in Santa Clara Valley. Local art groups will all have an opportunity to inform the conference about their activities and roles in the community. Table top discussions will be held in the afternoon to help individuals and groups improve their marketing, fund raising and organizational skills. Breakfast with mom

GILROY – The Mother’s Day Charity Breakfast will be held on Sunday, May 11, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Gilroy Elks Lodge, 2765 Hecker Pass. The breakfast raises funds for scholarships. VTA planning meeting

GILROY – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is holding a meeting to provide the public an opportunity to participate in the development of the Fiscal Year 2004 budget. Gav day open house

GILROY – Gav Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. All high school seniors and their parents, people interested in returning to school or transferring to Gavilan College and people who need new job skills are invited to explore what Gavilan College has to offer. There will be information tables, workshops and campus tours. Representatives will be on hand to explain the registration process, discuss program, certificate and degree options, as well as provide detailed information on financial aid, assessment, transfer programs, counseling, athletics and more. Workshops will include “Financial Aid – You CAN afford college, You’re not in high school anymore! Spaghetti social

SAN MARTIN – The first-annual San Martin Spaghetti Social will take place Friday, May 23, at 6 p.m. Enjoy dinner, a raffle and silent auction. Tickets will be sold at the door; adults are $6.50 and children are $3.50 (advance purchase $6/$3). Proceeds benefit numerous San Martin Neighborhood Alliance activities. Aviation scholarships

SAN MARTIN – The South County Airport Pilot’s Association (SCAPA), a non-profit organization, has funded two aviation scholarships. These scholarships will be awarded annually to promising young men or women who have a serious interest in aviation-related careers. The awards are in the amount of $500 each.

Recipients must be enrolled in and plan to continue a college curriculum leading to a degree in the field of aviation, or, for high schoolers, must be accepted to a two or four year college with a major in an aviation-related field.

Donations will be accepted from individuals or organizations interested in supporting the education of our youth.

Help teachers at Chevys

GILROY – Enjoy lunch or dinner at Chevys Fresh Mex in Gilroy and the restaurant will donate 20 percent to the Morgan Hill Teacher’s Aid Coalition. Piece by piece

MORGAN HILL – The Piece by Piece Quilt Guild of Morgan Hill is hosting its first-ever Quilt Show on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Grange Hall on Fourth Street in Morgan Hill. Kids gone fishin’

LOS BANOS – The 14th annual Kids’ Fishing Day, will be held at San Luis Creek State Recreation Area’s South Beach on the O’Neill Forebay, on Saturday, May 17. Young anglers 15 years and younger may sign in from 8 a.m. on, with prizes awarded at noon. Each participant will have his or her picture taken and will receive a tackle box, lunch, a small trophy cup and bait.
