Students perform musical

GILROY – Gilroy Unified School District Middle School Performing Arts proudly presents ‘Rock Around the Block,’ a 1950s musical performed by middle school students from Ascension Solarsano, Brownell Academy and South Valley Junior High.

Performances will be held at the Gilroy High School Theater on Friday, June 4, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, June 5, at 2 and 7 p.m.

Tickets are $9 for adults or $5 for students.

Be an alley artist

GILROY – The Fairview Drive Neighborhood presents “Alleyway Paint Out Day” on Saturday, June 5, starting at 8:30 a.m. at Southside Alley Way, 400 Fairview Drive. Help paint out the alleyway fence and make a positive difference in the community.

After the paint out, all participants are invited to lunch and treats. Sponsored by the Gilroy Police Department and South County Housing.

GILROY – Celestial Arts is offering more than $50,000 in cash and prizes in a free poetry contest.

‘Even if you have never entered a competition before,’ says Poetry Editor Michael Thomas, ‘this is your opportunity to win big. Even if you have written only one poem it deserves to be read and appreciated. Beginners are especially welcome.’

GILROY – Local television station Community Media Access Partnership (CMAP) is looking for residents of Gilroy, Hollister and San Juan Bautista to become producers, cast and crew members of their own TV shows.

The public is invited to tour the facilities and find out more at an orientation on Saturday, June 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Kelly Abbott at the CMAP office at Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Bvld.

After attending the orientation and signing up for membership, participants are encouraged to enroll for ‘Fast Track,’ six free basic and four low-cost advanced workshops for learning to create your own TV show.

Small Business Workshops

GILROY – The Gavilan College Small Business Development Center will host ‘Basic Bookkeeping for the Small Business Owner’ from noon to 3 p.m. and ‘Retirement Plans for Small Business’ from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 8, at the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St., Bldg. E.

The bookkeeping class will help get control of your business with the basic, written (no computers), double entry bookkeeping system, along with simple filing and record keeping techniques. Business banking, auto and petty cash records and working with an accountant will also be touched on.

The retirement plans class will present an overview of retirement plans, including SEP/IRA’s, SIMPLE, UNIK’s, Traditional IRA and Roth IRA. Learn how anyone in small business can set aside money for their ‘golden years’.

GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a Gilroy Community Blood Drive on Thursday, June 10, from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave.

To donate blood you must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. American Red Cross volunteer blood donors are required to provide identification before donating blood. Preferred identifiers include a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, or a Red Cross blood donor card.

GILROY – The public is invited to join Jeff Garcia and friends for the 2004 ‘Jeff Garcia Open Annual Golf Tournament’ benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation, St. Joseph’s Family Center and local youth scholarships. Tournament will be held on Friday, June 11, at Eagle Ridge Golf Club.

Award local helpers

GILROY – Nominations are now being accepted for the Gavilan College 2004 Community Spirit Awards.

The awards recognize contributions to the communities that form the Gavilan Joint Community College District. Each year, three sets of awards are presented, for the communities of Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Benito County. This year, for the first time, nominations are being solicited from the community at large.

Any individual, organization or business in the Gavilan College District (exclusive of Gavilan College employees) may be nominated. Anyone who lives or works in the district may submit a nomination.

The first set of awards for 2004 will be presented for the community of Morgan Hill at the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce Breakfast on Sept. 2. Nomination forms with selection criteria are available online. Completed nominations for the Morgan Hill award should be returned by Friday, June 11. Speak out on transportation

GILROY – Be heard about transportation issues in the valley during a discussion on Friday, June 11, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Historic Strand Theatre, 7588 Monterey St.

Guest speakers include Supervisor Don Gage, serving District 1, and Carl Guardino, President and CEO for SVMG.

The discussion is co-hosted by Gage, the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, the League of Women Voters of Santa Clara County, the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce and the SVMG.
