Gilroy – State officials are urging animal owners to have their horses vaccinated against West Nile Virus.
Last year, 540 horses contracted the disease. Of those, 356 were not vaccinated and 145 were vaccinated incompletely. There were 229 horse deaths.
“Outbreaks of West Nile Virus this year may be even worse than last year,” said California State Veterinarian Dr. Richard Breitmeyer. “If people get the necessary shots for their horses now, horses will have the protection they need against the deadly disease.”
Health officials say Santa Clara County is especially vulnerable to a serious outbreak this year.
There is no human vaccination for the virus. To help control spread of the virus, residents should take care to eliminate standing water from their properties.
Gilroy Neighborhood Academy 2005
Gilroy – For the next two Wednesdays, Gilroy residents can participate in a workshop about improving and maintaining quality neighborhoods.
Next Wednesday, March 23, attendees will learn how to build and maintain the community in their neighborhood, from organizing and running a meeting, to hearing from leaders who have successfully established neighborhood associations.
Light refreshments will be provided, and those who attended last week, as well as the next two, will receive a certificate of recognition from Mayor Al Pinheiro.
The workshops are in the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St., from 5:45 to 7:30pm.

Library’s centennial celebration
Gilroy – The Gilroy Public Library will kick off the first of a series of events celebrating its centennial anniversary.
The first event takes place Saturday March 19, at 11:30am at the library.
The event will feature discussions on the library’s historical origins, a presentation by a local youth on the importance of the library, and a discussion and presentation of proposed new library.
The county bookmobile will also be on hand. The library is located at 7387 Rosanna St.
Kids Discover Arts workshop Saturday
Gilroy – Local professionals will conduct workshops and activities for children ages 5 to 11 from 10am to 3pm Saturday at Wheeler Community Center, corner of 6th and Rosanna streets.
There will be more than 20 hands-on workshops for the children.
All children must be accompanied by an adult. No pets or strollers are allowed inside and no one will be allowed in at 2pm.
Admission is free and concessions will be available. Children should wear paint-friendly clothing.

Discovery hike at Henry Coe Saturday
Morgan Hill – Henry Coe State Park, 9000 E. Dunne Ave., will hold a Discovery Hike at 10am Saturday.
Dan McCranie will guide guests on a strenuous 10 to 12 mile hike through Middle Ridge and Poverty Flat loop. Bring lots of water, snacks and lunch.
That same day, a Beginner and Intermediate Backpacking” session will be held at 10am, “Secret Spots,” a moderate, 5-mile hike, at 10am, and “Natural History of Coe Park” at 8pm, where Winslow Briggs, author of The Trails of Henry W. Coe State Park, will reveal the harmony of the plants and animals that thrive in Coe Park.
