Gilroy – Police are looking for a man suspected of robbing someone in the parking lot of Rodeway Inn, 611 Leavesley Road about 6:26am Monday.
A black man between 35 and 40 years old, who was clean-shaven and wearing a purple backpack, black jacket and dark pants, approached the victim in the parking lot, police said. With his hand in his left jacket pocket, the suspect appeared as though he may have had a gun and demanded money from the victim, police said.
The victim gave the suspect $100 in cash and the suspect ran northbound on San Ysidro Avenue. Police soon after detained a person matching the suspect’s description, but the victim said it was not the robber. The suspect remains outstanding.
Two arrested with documents
Gilroy – Police arrested two people Saturday after they were found in possession of materials that would enable them to commit fraud and identity theft.
Duane Anthony Aguero, 32, and Nicole Roxanne Deluna, 27, both of 9390 Trailblazer Way, were arrested at 10:23am near Uvas and Miller avenues following a traffic stop, police said. In their car were various stolen identification cards, driver’s licenses, checks and altered checks, police said. Aguero is being held without bail for violating parole, and Deluna was booked into county jail.
Vandals cause $1,000 damage to Del Buono
Gilroy – Unknown suspects broke into Antonio Del Buono Elementary School through a roof hatch Saturday night and used fire extinguishers to vandalize an area containing computers, copiers, and a fax machine, police said.
The suspects used four fire extinguishers that were located inside the 9300 Wren Ave. school, and caused an estimated $1,000 damage, police said. School is on spring break this week.

Become the 2005 Garlic Festival Queen
Gilroy – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association is proud to announce that the 27th annual Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Scholarship Pageant is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, beginning at 7pm at the Gavilan College Theater.
Applications are available through the Garlic Festival office, 7473 Monterey Street, Gilroy, CA 95020, or by calling the office at 842-1625. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 to 24; a resident of Gilroy, San Martin, Morgan Hill, Hollister, San Juan Bautista or Aromas; single female who has never been married and has no children; and a high school graduate by June 2005.
Deadline to enter is March 31, at 4:30pm.
Contestants will be judged in the areas of personal interview, talent, evening gown and garlic speech. The garlic speech consists of a song, skit, dance, etc., as long as it is about garlic.
ICF scholarship breakfast Sunday
Gilroy – Branch 28 of the Italian Catholic Federation presents it’s semi-annual Scholarship Breakfast and Bake Sale Sunday April 3, 7:30 to 11:30am at St. Mary’s Church Cullen Hall, 11 First St.
Proceeds benefit branch 28 scholarship programs and other ICF charities. Donation is $5 for adults and $3 children under 12.

Gators tryouts
begin Monday
Gilroy – Gilroy Gator Swim Team will hold their annual “Swim Clinic and Swim Team Tryouts” Monday, April 4 through Friday, April 8 from 5 to 6pm each evening at the Gilroy High School pool.
Swimmers ages 5 though 18 are invited to join in the fun. Cost is a $20 swim clinic fee with registration forms by March 28. Registrations forms after received after March 28 may be subject to a $5 late fee. Checks must be made payable to GGST. Registration is now open from 5 to 6pm at the Gilroy High Pool officer Monday through Friday.
Space is limited to the first 100 participants with a completed registration form and paid fee.

Chamber offers scholarship for seniors
Gilroy – Seniors who will be graduating in 2005 are invited to stop by the Chamber of Commerce office to pick up scholarship applications.
This year, the Chamber will be awarding $7,500 in scholarships, and In addition, scholarships for the Gilroy Rotary Club totaling $7,000 will be awarded. Applications for each of these scholarships are available. Figure that if a student receives a $500 scholarship with four hours invested in the application process, a return on that investment of time equates to $125 per hour. The deadline for the chamber’s scholarships is Friday, April 8, and the deadline for Gilroy Rotary scholarships is Friday, May 20.
The Chamber office is located at 7471 Monterey St. and the scholarship applications are all available in the front lobby.
‘The Fantasticks’ hits the stage in April
Morgan Hill – South Valley Civic Theater presents “The Fantasticks” at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse at 8pm on April 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30, May 6 and 7; and at 2pm on April 24 and May 1. Cost is $15 for adults or $12 for students and seniors.

Bike race invades downtown MH
Morgan Hill – The Morgan Hill Grand Prix bike race will take over downtown on Sunday, April 10.
The 300 to 500 bike riders and 2,000 spectators will follow the 1-mile circuit starting on Monterey Road and finishing with a spectacular, breath-taking plunge down the West Third Street hill across the narrow bridge to the finish line on Monterey.
Organizers believe the event will cause little disruption and punch up local business.
In fact, many businesses are so eager for the hundreds of potential customers, they plan to open on a day they are normally closed. Even though Monterey Road will be closed to traffic from 5am to 7pm, most businesses are accessible from the back.
In addition to watching the race and visiting downtown shops and restaurants, spectators can view 10 to 15 displays set up by event sponsors and cycling companies and enjoy a day-long string of events for children and adults.

Morgan Hill – Pamper your palate at the 7th Annual South Valley Wine Auction, Friday April 8 at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 S. Monterey Road.
KBAY Radio’s Jona Denz-Hamilton will help host the evening. Sample delicacies from 30 fine restaurants and award-winning wineries.
