The event is for the developmentally disabled to take part in a fun and social environment.

It includes limited carnival games, unlimited jump houses and games, lunch and a T-shirt, and is free to participants with special needs, or $10 for non-developmentally disabled persons.

Know what to do

GILROY – The Gilroy Fire Department will educate the public about the Emergency Medical System, injury prevention and health awareness for both adults and children. The week of May 15 to 22 is 2004 National Emergency Medical Services Week. The them: ”EMS: When It Matters Most” emphasizes that no matter what the emergency or when it happens, EMS paramedics and EMTs are there to give life-saving care. For National EMS Week, the community is invited to attend the following:

• Wednesday, May 19, at the Senior Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m., GFD will hold ”Free Baby-sitter’s First Aid Class,” with certification issued upon completion of the class. Registration is required.

• On Saturday, May 22 at Sunrise Station, from 2 to 4 p.m. ”Pool Safety” and ”Bicycle Helmet Safety” will be offered by GFD.

GILROY – The Gavilan College Small Business Development Center presents ‘Basic Bookkeeping for the Small Business Owner’ from noon to 3 p.m., and ‘Credit Card and Debt Reduction’ from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, May 18 at the SBDC offices at the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St., Bldg. E.

Basic Bookkeeping will help you get control of your business with the basic, written (no computers), double entry bookkeeping system, along with simple filing and record keeping techniques. Business banking, auto and petty cash records and working with an accountant will also be touched on in this fast-paced workshop.

With ‘Debt Reduction,’ Instructor Mary L. Gibson, CFP financial problem solver and coach, will present strategies for debt reduction and credit card repair.

Cost for each workshop is $20, payable in advance or at the door.

Community Blood Drive

GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a community blood drive on Wednesday, May 19, at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In May, the American Red Cross is trying to build a large reserve of blood for an expected drop-off in the summer due to donor vacations.

Donators must be 17 years or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Please bring ID, two forms if it is not government issued. To speed up wait time, schedule an appointment at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE.

GILROY – Chitactac-Adams County Park, located at the intersection of Watsonville and Burchell roads, will hold ‘Wildlife Sensory Awareness’ from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 21.

Robot wars

Mariachi with Symphony

GILROY – The South Valley Symphony has invited the popular and talented Mariachi Santa Cecelia to appear with them for their final concert of the season at the Gavilan College Theater on Saturday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. This is the first time conductor Henry Mollicone has performed with a Mariachi ensemble during his musical career.

The South Valley Symphony will open the program with The Little Train of the Caipira by Hector Villa-Lobos. Concerto de Aranjuez, written for guitar and orchestra composed by Joaquin Rodrigo with Rick Vandivier as soloist will follow.
