Plan it first

GILROY – The Gavilan College Small Business Development Center will hold “Writing Your Own Business Plan,” on Monday, Jan. 12, from 5:45 to 9 p.m., at their office at the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St., building E.

Comment on EIR

Get spiritual

GILROY – The Sanctuary Center for Spiritual Exploration will host “The Tongue is the Mistress of the Body,” a weekend workshop in spiritual disciplines and communication skills led by Master Teacher Louise Bloom. The workshop is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 12 through Monday, Jan. 19. It will cover spiritual disciplines including: yoga, meditation, chanting, drawing, sharing, specific teaching and exercises in communication skills and individual readings for personal direction. Adopt a pet

MORGAN HILL – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) will hold a pet adoption fair on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 3 and 4, from noon to 5 p.m., at Petco, located at the corner of Tennant Avenue and Monterey Road. More than 200 animal companions are in need of a loving home. Find a new furry friend, make a donation to cover their many expenses or sign-up to volunteer for the shelter. Details: 686-3900.

New Year’s Eve celebration

MORGAN HILL – Mayor Dennis Kennedy, The Morgan Hill Sister City Comm-ission and the Morgan Hill Times will hold “New Year’s Around the World,” on Wednesday, Dec. 31, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., at the Community and Cultural Center, located at 17500 Monterey Road.

At 9 p.m., New York will be the first stop on the “trip around the world.” Next destination will be Mexico, starting at 10 p.m. At 11 p.m., “travel” to Italy with Italian drinks and music. A no-host bar will be available to serve themed drinks from all locations. Finally, at midnight, “come back home” to Morgan Hill and celebrate the New Year with complimentary champagne and party favors. Casino games begin at 8 p.m. and last until the midnight. Hot and cold appetizers will be served throughout the night. Dancing will be from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. to the tunes of Mystical Mike, and Singer Damien Carter will join to sing songs from around the world.

Attire is black and white, casual or formal. Cost is $75 per person and is tax deductible, as proceeds will go to the South County Dayworkers Center. The South Valley Civic Theatre will also give guests the chance to see a showing of “The 1940’s Radio Hour” play from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m., in the adjoining Morgan Hill Playhouse. MORGAN HILL – The Morgan Hill Flower Lovers Club, including Gilroy and San Martin, will hold their monthly meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 12:30 p.m., in the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road. Hospice volunteers needed

MORGAN HILL – The Kaiser Permanente Hospice Program at Santa Teresa Hospital, 50 E Main Ave., Morgan Hill, is in need of volunteers for the Gilroy and Morgan Hill area. Play in real snow

MORGAN HILL – A Children’s Garden Childcare and Learning Center, located at 610 East Dunne Ave., will host its third annual “Snow Day Open House,” on Saturday, Jan. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids up to 12 can bring their mittens and play real snow games, snowball golf, go down a giant snowman slide, do ice painting, pet baby snow bunnies and more. Learn about Afghanistan

MORGAN HILL – Mountain View city councilwoman Rosemary Stasek will present an informal lecture on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m., at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, located at Monterey Road and East Fifth Street. Stasek recently returned from her second trip to Afghanistan this summer where she worked on a reconstruction project in the women’s prison in Kabul. She will present a slide show and discuss the current situation there, specifically the continuing challenges facing women during this time of dramatic transition.

Join the team

MORGAN HILL – The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training will hold meetings throughout Jan. for Bay Area residents to learn about participating in their endurance training program. Participants of all athletic levels receive support to reach their ultimate goal of running or walking a marathon, cycling a 100-mile course, completing a triathlon or experiencing a mountain biking event, while raising money to help patients and find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and myeloma. They will have a meeting Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Morgan Hill Community Center, 1700 Monterey Road, at 6:30 p.m.

Play by the rules

SACRAMENTO – The Franchise Tax Board is now contacting nearly 600,00 Californians who failed to file their 2002 state income tax returns. The FTB’s filing program targets people who earned California income, but did not file a state income tax return. This program collected nearly $370 million dollars last year.

“During these difficult financial times, everyone needs to pay their taxes and play by the rules,” stated State Controller and FTB Chair Steve Westly.

Help for teen moms

GILROY – The South Valley Pregnancy Care Center, 7891-C Westwood Drive, is a nonprofit organization that helps pregnant teens, and supplies them with necessary items, such as baby’s clothing, car seats and more.
