Go batty at Coyote

GILROY – Join Ranger Crockett for a blood-sucking good time on Saturday, July 26, from 8 to 9 p.m. Learn about the world’s only flying mammal – the bat. Play a game of batball, visit a bat condo and write some bat poetry while munching “guano gooeys.” Meet at the visitor center. Support disaster prevention

GILROY – The South County Neighborhood Disaster Preparedness Program, which trains people to survive and thrive in an emergency or disaster, is hosting a fund raiser at Chevy’s, at 8440 Murray Ave. in Gilroy, on Wednesday, July 30. • Gilroy main campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.: Register through Thursday, July 31, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Fridays from 9 to11:30 a.m. From Aug. 1 to 15, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 2, register from 9 a.m. to

1 p.m.

• Morgan Hill and Hollister: Register through Friday, July 25, Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 2, register from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. From Aug. 11 to 15, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:30 a .m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and Friday 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.

Symphony sounds

GILROY – South Valley Symphony has announced its concert schedule for the 2003-04 season.

• The symphony is kicking off its 30th season with a concert on Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m., featuring operatic arias from “La Traviata” and “Rigoletto” by Guiseppe Verdi sung by Gilroy resident soprano Karen McConachin and baritone Michael Morris.

• A concert on Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. will feature Phil Robb and the Gavilan College Concert Choir in a performance of the “Gloria” by Vivaldi. The night will also showcase the premier performance of a selection called “South Valley Fanfare” by South Valley Symphony Music Director and Conductor Henry Mollicone.

• A family concert will be on Feb. 7 at 2 p.m.

• A celebration of solo artists from the orchestra will be April 3 at 7:30 p.m. Artists will include flautist Patricia Chambers and viola player Scott Spangler performing music by Donizetti, Mandel and Copland.

• A performance on May 22 at 7:30 p.m. will feature music of Spanish traditions. Arrangements are currently under way to include a Mariachi band for this concert.

• A sixth concert will feature local artists for a jazz and blues presentation. A date and time haven’t been announced.

Battle of the bands

GILROY – The Gilroy Youth Commission is looking for local bands to perform in an event on Saturday, Sept. 13, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Christmas Hill Park amphitheater. The event is free to the public. The commission is hoping to get at least eight local bands. Details: Myra Esparza at 846-0460.

Rome will fall at GHS

GILROY – Sixteen local teenagers will perform in “Romulus” a farce about the fall of the Roman Empire by Gore Vidal today and Saturday, July 25 and 26, at 8 p.m. in the Gilroy High School Theater. The Garlic party continues

GILROY – The Historic Strand Theater hosts national and local talent this weekend.

Today, several members of local favorite Suave will play. Their distinctive brand of Latin jazz/rock is popular throughout the South Bay and Santa Cruz areas. Jorge Santana, brother of multiplatinum recording artist Carlos Santana and a former member of the band Santana, joins Suave. The show starts at 9 p.m. and costs $25.

On Saturday, July 26, The Austin Lounge Lizards will bring their country/bluegrass satire before The Cowlicks, an “alt-country California style” take the stage. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $16 in advance, $18 at the door.

On Sunday, July 27, Gilroy’s own Juz-Cuz will bring their funk, dance and R&B sounds at 7 p.m. for a free performance. Details: Christine Brooks, 846-8455.

Wine appreciation 101

MORGAN HILL – Guglielmo Winery is offering this wine education series workshop on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 29, 30 and 31, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. These classes are designed to help you understand how to taste and evaluate wines. Learn what all those confusing terms mean and what to look for when buying wines. Topics will include dynamics of taste and smell characteristics of various wines and wine tasting and evaluation.
