Help clean a local creek

GILROY – Volunteers are needed Saturday to help spruce up about 40 miles of streams throughout Santa Clara County during the 19th annual Coastal Cleanup Day. Volunteers should report at 9 a.m. to Uvas Creek at Christmas Hill Park.

Participants are asked to wear long pants, sturdy shoes and sunscreen. Creek-cleaning supplies and refreshments will be provided.

Last year’s event drew more than 1,200 volunteers who pulled thousands of pounds of trash and debris from county creeks in the annual autumn effort. Removing trash from creeks protects water quality and the habitat of the plants and animals that live in our creeks, and prevents pollution from flowing down the creeks to San Francisco and Monterey bays.

The Creek Connections Action Group is a consortium of public agencies and non-profit organizations that share a goal of protecting Santa Clara County’s waterways.
