Mount Madonna Challenge
Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony’s 31st annual running of the Mount Madonna Challenge 6K walk and race and 12K race to be held at the Mount Madonna County Park will be Sunday.
Runners will gather at the Sprig Lake picnic area at the base of the park on Highway 152. The 6K walk and run event will commence at 8:30am sharp followed by the 12K run at 9am. The 6K loop course has an elevation gain of 700 feet whereas the 12K loop course has an elevation gain of 1,200 feet.Â

Symphony rehearsals begin
Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony will commence rehearsals Wednesday. Openings exist for violin, viola, and cello and contrabass positions. Openings also exist for French horn, trumpet and trombone positions in the brass section. The woodwind section currently has openings in the clarinet and oboe sections.
All players interested in trying out for these positions should contact John Graham at (831) 623-4062. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9:45pm at the Ascension Solorsano band room, 7121 Grenache Way.
Perchlorate group meets Thursday
San Martin – The Perchlorate Community Advisory group meets Thursday, from 7 to 9pm at the San Martin Lion Club Hall, 425 Murphy Ave.

Shaving for a furnace
Gilroy – Charles Krahenbuhl will be shaving his beard to raise money to replace the furnace at his church parsonage. He will be shaving for the first time in 30 years. Attend the beard shearing at the United Methodist Church, 7600 Church St., Sunday, at 11am.

Car wash benefits softball team
Gilroy – Support the Gilroy Chaos Sports Organization Girl’s Fast Pitch Softball team, to get to the 2006 Fall Classic Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. They will be holding a car wash from 8am to 4pm, Saturday Sept. 2 at Jim’s Auto, 298 First St.
The cost is $5 for small cars and $10 for trucks, vans and SUVs. Any other donations are greatly appreciated.

Time to register
for t-ball
Morgan Hill – The Mt. Madonna YMCA is accepting registrations for youth t-ball for ages 2 to 10. The season runs from Sept. 16 to Nov. 11 and is played Saturdays in Morgan Hill. They are also looking for volunteer coaches. Financial aid is available.

U.S. 101 delays
this weekend
Monterey County – Motorists traveling toward Monterey Peninsula this weekend will encounter heavy delays on southbound U.S. 101 between Dunbarton and Crazy Horse Canyon roads. Crews will be doing shoulder and roadside tree work from 5:30 to 10am today and 5:30 to 11am Sunday. Motorists are strongly advised to take Hwy. 17 or Hwy. 129 west to Hwy. 1 south.
