Life giving golf

GILROY – J.R. Brewski’s announces ‘Drive For Life,’ a golf tournament, on Sunday, July 4 at Gilroy Golf Course.

Entry fee of $65 per person and includes green fee, golf cart, barbecue lunch, beverage ticket and a chance to win prizes ranging from golf items to a catered dinner for eight.

The event also will include contests such as the longest drive, closest to the pin and more. One lucky winner will also have one of there favorite items named after them and placed on the menu at J.R. Brewski’s, located at 8080 Santa Teresa Blvd. suite 100. A portion of the proceeds will benefit The American Cancer Society.

College for Kids

GILROY – There is still time to register for the second session of Gavilan College’s College For Kids. The session runs from July 6 to 23, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kids entering grades 4 through 7 get their choice of morning specialty classes in subjects like computers, math, and foreign language, plus afternoon swimming and outdoor fun. Fee is $315.

The Gavilan College Small Business Development Center presents ‘Just Give Me the Answers,’ a workshop with Certified Financial Planner and author Sheryl Garret, on Tuesday, July 6 beginning at 6 p.m. at the SBDC offices located at 8351 Church St., Bldg. E.

Garrett was named one of America’s top 25 most influential people in financial planning by Investment Magazine for the second year in a row. Get your money questions answered. Workshop is free, but reservations are preferred.

Be a life giver

GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a Gilroy Community Blood Drive on Thursday, July 8, from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave.

To donate blood you must be 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.

American Red Cross volunteer blood donors are required to provide identification before donating blood. Preferred ID’s include a government-issued identification, such as a driver’s license, or a Red Cross blood donor card. Save time and make an appointment.

Help for moms

GILROY – South Valley Pregnancy Care Center, 7891-C Westwood Drive, helps women who are facing pregnancy through friendship and emotional support.

All of the services are free; including pregnancy tests, pregnancy, abortion and post-abortion peer-counseling and information, and information and referrals to adoption and community agencies.

Physical needs such as maternity and baby clothing, accessories and furnishings also are available. Office hours are Tuesday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m.

Entertainers needed

GILROY – Live Oak Adult Day Services, 651 W. Sixth St., is in need of volunteers who can share their talents with the elderly at the center.

Come and sing, play the piano, share vacation slides or a pet, or tell stories or jokes. All ages are welcome to share their time and talents.

Be in the write group

GILROY – Join the Gilroy Writing Project every third Saturday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Gilroy Library.

Experienced writers from print, broadcast and other media will share tips and anecdotes on the writing life.

GILROY – Donate phones less than five years old and the Shelter Alliance will give Community Solutions between 50 cents and $20 for each cell phone.
