Sheriff Hill keynote speaker
• Gilroy – San Benito County Sheriff/Coroner Curtis J. Hill will deliver the keynote speech at Gavilan College’s Commencement Ceremony May 27.
The ceremony begins at 6:30 pm at the Gavilan College Gymnasium. The event is free, but space is limited.
GHS hosts weekend band festival
• Gilroy – The Gilroy High School Band Program invites you to attend the California Music Educator’s Association Area 8 Band Festival at GHS.
Performances are by high school and middle school bands from throughout Santa Clara County and last 25 minutes each. Friday performances will occur between 3 and 10 pm, and Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm. GHS Symphonic Band performs Friday at 8 pm, and the GHS Wind Ensemble at 9:25pm Friday. This is a non-competitive festival.
Warm and fuzzy pet adoption fair
• Gilroy – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter is hosting a pet adoption fair on Saturday, May 21 from noon to 5pm at the Petco on San Ysidro Ave. in Gilroy Please stop by to adopt a warm and fuzzy companion, meet our volunteers or make a donation to support our animal rescue efforts.
Award for water district
• Gilroy – The Santa Clara Valley Water District has been honored with an environmental award for its water softener rebate program.
The district received the 2005 Susanne Wilson Award for Pollution Prevention and Resource Conservation for its year-long pilot program encouraging 400 county residents to upgrade their water softeners to conserve water and energy. The program saved about 1 million gallons of water and about 1,700 kilowatt hours of electricity. Older softener systems also discharge harmful salts and household cleaning chemicals.
Bargain tack sale for Pony Club
• Gilroy – Golden Hills Pony Club will be holding a tack sale Saturday, May 14 from 9am to 2pm at California Stables, 11590 New Ave.
Saddle pads, breeches, shirts, chaps, tall boots, field boots, gear, horse blankets, sheets, coolers, halters, wraps and bandages, bridles, horse boots, girths, lead ropes and stirrup irons all at rock-bottom prices. Symphony pops concert May 21
• Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony will conclude its 31st season with the annual pops concert on May 21 at 7:30pm at the Gavilan College theater. Selections from Evita, Miss Saigon, West Side Story and The King and I will be featured during the second half of the program. Opening the program will be the popular Light Cavalry Overture by Franz von Suppe followed by the Adagio in G Minor composed by Albinoni with special arrangement by Giazotto. Tickets are $15 (adults), $12 (seniors) and $7 (students).

Wings of History; free airplane rides
• San Martin – Bring them to the Wings of History Air Museum and South County Airport Open House Saturday, May 14, from 8am until 4pm. The event is intended to encourage young people to experience aviation. Free airplane rides will be offered, hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association Young Eagles Program. Tours through the Wings of History Air Museum feature historical aircraft. Also on display at the airport across the street from the museum will be general aviation airplanes hosted by pilots from SCAPA, the South County Airport Pilots Association.
The Young Eagles program provides an opportunity for youths between 8 and 17 years of age to talk with a pilot, fly in a private plane and learn about exploring our skies. Sponsored by the EAA, the Young Eagles program is a free activity for kids. Young Eagle pilots will offer free rides from 10am until 2pm. Parents must accompany participating youngster(s) to the airport and plane, and sign a release and authorization form. Once this paperwork is completed, the kids will fly with an EAA- sanctioned Young Eagles pilot. The new Young Eagle’s name will be entered into the World’s Largest Logbook. Kids also will be eligible for raffle prizes – like flight lessons.
Activities getting under way at the museum site, 12777 Murphy Ave., San Martin, include tethered hot air balloon demonstrations (6:30am), biplanes, guided tours of the museum, a display of vintage aircraft and more aviation-related events, including plastic model building and flying model construction classes. Admission is free.
Horse lovers get together in SM
• San Martin – The San Martin Horsemen’s Association will hold its May general meeting on Friday, May 13, at 7pm at the Morgan Hill Grange Hall, 40 E. 4th St. Everyone welcome – interesting and informative program and potluck.

A family-friendly piano recital
• Gilroy – Monterey Street Music Academy presents pianist William Kenville in a family-friendly, solo recital on Saturday, May 14 beginning at 2pm at the Music Academy studios, 7423 Monterey St.
The program will include works in the Romantic style by Frederic Chopin, as well as repertoire by U.S. composers, Louis M. Gottschalk, Jelly Roll Morton and Scott Joplin.

Volunteer for Gilroy Health Day
• Gilroy – Volunteers are needed for the second annual Gilroy Community Health Day on May 21 at Glenview Elementary from 11am to 3pm. Needed: Participants at the check-in table, information tables, volunteer check-in table, volunteer hospitality, “ask me” Spanish and English speakers, set up and clean up, parking and kids corner.
The goal of the Annual Gilroy Community Health Day is to increase awareness of and access to health care resources to the residents of Gilroy, particularly uninsured people, children and families, and seniors. This free event will include educational information and resources, various health screenings, no fee “Talk with a Doc” sessions, and referrals for follow-up care.

A Gilroy treat: Home, garden tour
• Gilroy –The Gilroy Assistance League presents their first annual Home & Garden Tour, “Impressions” May 21 and 22, from 10am to 3pm. This is a walking tour featuring four beautiful homes and gardens in the gated community of “The Forest.” To complete the tour, complimentary refreshments and an original work of art will be raffled each day in the Hacienda Style gardens of local Landscape Architect, Karen Aitken-Bernosky. $25 by May 14 or $30 at the event.
